Boxing legend Mike Tyson returns to fight Roy Jones Jr. in an eight-round exhibition match on Saturday. Here’s a complete preview, including updated boxing odds and our pick.
Mike Tyson vs. Roy Jones Jr.
Saturday, November 28, 2020 – 09:00 PM EST at STAPLES Center
Fight Details
ESPN’s Ariel Helwani broke the news in July: “Confirmed with CSAC’s Andy Foster that Mike Tyson will fight Roy Jones Jr. in an eight-round exhibition bout on 9/12 in Cali. No fans in attendance, he said. No headgear. “Larger gloves,” but “they’re still working that out. Maybe 12 (ounces),” he said. First reported by Kevin Iole.”
In the fight, there will be no judges and if either Tyson or Jones suffers a cut, it will be stopped. The event was initially set to take place on September 12th but it was pushed back to November 28th after Tyson’s team felt it would be better to market it with more time. Jones didn’t agree with the change at first but the new terms of his deal satisfied him. The event will be live on www.tysonontriller.com all over the world.
Tyson’s Intense Comeback Training
The former heavyweight champion worked his way into an incredible shape over recent months and he’s been on the comeback trail for a while. Tyson looked fearsome in his training videos. “The Baddest Man on the Planet” talked about his boxing comeback plans in May: “I do around two hours on cardio, I do the bike and I do the treadmill for an hour,” Tyson explained. “And then I do some light weights. I do around 300, 250 reps. And then I start my day with the boxing, and then I go in there and hit the mitts for 30 minutes, 25 minutes, trying to get into better condition.”
The 54-year-old gave a video interview to TMZ in May and also credited his new physique to some kind of stem cell therapy. There is much anticipation for this fight. Tyson insists that he won’t let up despite the fact that this is an exhibition bout. He expects Jones to bring that same intensity.
Tyson and Jones’ Last Fights
“I feel unstoppable now,” Tyson told Facebook Gaming recently. “The gods of war have reawakened me. They’ve ignited my ego and want me to go to war again. Imagine I went out there and fought. I could help all these people and animals we’re talking about. That’s really what it’s about.”
Tyson went 50-6 with 44 knockouts in his career. His last fight was on June 11th, 2005 against Kevin McBride at the MCI Center in Washington. McBride was called a “tomato can” by Tyson before the fight. “Iron Mike” predicted a victory but failed to answer the bell for the seventh round and lost by corner stoppage.
Roy Jones Jr. went 66-9 with 47 knockouts. His last fight was on February 8th, 2018 against Scott Sigmon at the Civic Center in Pensacola, Florida and he won via unanimous decision. “I know I’m 51 but I will fight somebody over 50. And I ain’t scared to fight nobody, nowhere, at no time. Headgear, no headgear, I don’t care. So just be aware, and be careful what you say,” Jones said on Instagram Live.

Danny Williams, who knocked out Tyson in the fourth round at Freedom Hall State Fairground in Louisville on July 30th, 2004, told The Sun that he feels he may do significant harm to Jones. “I think Roy is going to get seriously hurt. He is a natural middleweight.”
Boxing Fights In Vegas 2021
Tyson has the power advantage while Jones has an edge in speed. That said, keep in mind that Tyson ruled as a heavyweight during his prime while Jones was mostly a middleweight and light heavyweight, though he did capture the WBA Heavyweight title. It was never his natural weight class and he eventually returned to light heavyweight. Bookmaker has Mike Tyson as a -213 favorite while Roy Jones Jr. is at +167. The Over/Under hasn’t been set but my initial lean would be to go Under. As for a moneyline pick… good luck going against Tyson!
My Pick: Under (TBD)
